If you happen to be in the midwest of the United Kingdom (perhaps traveling from Wales, Ireland, or Preston, England), Liverpool is a great place to think of the LDS pioneers who sailed from this country. A big, bustling city, the Albert Docks are vast and rather empty compared to their heyday. We were delighted to find the full-size Seatrek statue there (we have a small version in our living room from our 2001 Seatrek sailing voyage), commemorating these emigrants and their journey. (If you're so inclined, there is also a Beatles museum to pay homage to them there as well.)

Driving nearly two hours south, you come to the metropolis of Birmingham. There Welch ancestor and pioneer
Rebecca Rogers worked as a servant girl and later ran a shop while raising her family as a single mother. I was intrigued to learn about the early canal system and see how prominent the canals were in both the Birmingham's geography and its history.
