On this day of the vote for Scottish independence, our ancestral ties there feel especially strong.

Alas, our short time in Scotland only whetted our appetite for a future genealogical trip there. We were traveling without a car on scheduled day trips, where we only saw window glimpses of places to return. We have Scottish ancestry on my paternal side (the Muirs/ Thompsons/McAulays/Robbs/McFarlanes), and my husband's maternal side (the Hunters and Bathgates). The Muirs were from the Stirling area, just outside of Edinburgh, noted for the medieval doings of William Wallace (the battle fictionalized in the movie Braveheart). The Bathgates were from... Bathgate! That city is about a half-hour drive west of Edinburgh. The Thompsons and McAulays lived on the western Isle of Islay (pronounced Ayelah), now famous for its whiskey. And the Hunters probably originated from the western Hunterston area, although they lived closer to Edinburgh in the nineteenth century.
