Heritage trails: Utah pioneer cemeteries

There were a few ancestral pioneer graves in Utah I'd never visited, and had made it my goal to get there this year (before the snow). Now only one left, Hannah Tupper Grover way down in Loa... someday!

We have a few of Barb's Welch and Woodland ancestors buried in the Willard Pioneer Cemetery in northern Utah. The cemetery suffered from a flood in 1923 that washed remains and headstones into nearby fields, but it has been restored as close to the original burial locations as possible.

Elizabeth was buried here despite having predicted that the area would be struck by a flood.
A little iron fence was built around her grave, and when the Willard flood of 1923 covered the l
and with mud and rocks, her fenced grave was easily located and restored.

Next up: Providence cemetery near Logan, lined with enormous evergreen trees. Only one ancestor here: Bertha Poulsen (spelled Paulsen on the headstone--mother of Mary Sorensen) and her husband Christian.

In Farmington, Gawain's ancestor Thomas Grover is buried by several of his wives. This cemetery is particularly lovely in autumn with the changing leaves on the mountains behind.
the marker is nearly six feet tall, judging from nearby descendants
his marker is embellished by his portrait and an etching of the famed ferry crossing
Thomas Grover
An enterprising, industrious, & charitable pioneer.
A devoted & faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Captain in Nauvoo Legion & personal bodyguard of the Prophet Joseph Smith.
Called on several missions and to serve on numerous High Councils of the church.
Wives' names listed on the back side, and then:
Member of the Original Pioneer Co. of 1847
One of the founders of Centerville & Farmington, Utah
Served in Territorial Legislature & as Davis County Judge
various wives and children buried nearby
(except not ours; our ancestor Hannah is in Loa, and their son Thomas in Morgan)
Final stop in American Fork, an especially large cemetery, to find several generations of Scottish pioneers on Gayle's side. They are all buried on the southeastern side of the cemetery.
